About this metric

What it measures

Spent Volume by Creation Date Bands sums the BTC value of outputs spent each day, grouped by the calendar year those outputs were created. Each year-labeled series is measured in BTC, showing the size of flows from that output vintage rather than the number of outputs consumed.

How to read it

A jump in an old vintage means a larger BTC amount from that year's remaining outputs was spent. The 2021 series reached about 8.32 million BTC on September 14, 2021, illustrating how large gross daily turnover can be while outputs created and spent within the same year remain in one band.

These are gross spent amounts: coins may be counted again after being recreated and spent, and wallet reshuffles do not imply a change of owner. A year denotes output creation, not mining or an investor's first purchase; use count-based bands to check whether a spike is concentrated in a few large outputs.

FAQ

Can a day's spent volume count the same BTC more than once?

Yes. Spending creates new outputs, and those can be spent again that day. Gross flow is therefore not a count of unique coins leaving long-term storage.

How do volume bands differ from spent output count bands?

Volume bands add BTC amounts, while count bands give every output one unit. Comparing them reveals whether a vintage's activity comes from large outputs or many smaller ones.

Does an old year's volume always mean long-term investors are exiting?

It confirms that outputs from that year were consumed. Custody moves, consolidation and transfers within the same owner's wallets can produce the same observation without a sale.
