About this metric

What it measures

Net Realized Profit/Loss sums the USD difference between the spending value and previous on-chain cost of coins transferred during the day. Equivalently, it is realized profit minus realized loss, measured in USD; a positive result means gains exceed losses among the coins that moved.

How to read it

Large positive readings indicate net gains being recognized on transferred holdings, while negative readings indicate net losses. The supplied history reached about +$10.52 billion on November 21, 2024 and -$5.80 billion on March 30, 2023. Compare the size and persistence of readings with market cap to put nominal dollar extremes in context.

A chain transfer is an accounting realization, not proof of a cash sale. Internal wallet movements can reset cost, and a few old large holdings can dominate a day. Netting also hides gross activity: a small result can combine very large profits and losses.

FAQ

How is realized P/L different from NUPL?

Realized P/L concerns coins transferred during the day and is expressed in USD. NUPL concerns unrealized gains and losses on the held supply and divides them by market value.

Why can realized losses appear on a day when BTC rises?

Realization compares the current spending price with each coin's previous cost, not with yesterday's price. Coins acquired above today's price can still move at a loss during a daily rally.

Does net realized P/L of zero mean nobody took gains or losses?

No. Gross realized gains and losses can offset one another. Check them separately if the question is how much profit taking or loss realization occurred in total.
