Median Spent Output Lifespan (MSOL) takes the median time between creation and spending of the outputs spent on a given day, in days. Each counted output has equal weight regardless of its BTC amount, so the metric describes the middle output age rather than a volume-weighted average.
Higher values mean the middle of the spent-output population is older; lower values mean recently created outputs dominate by count. The full-history median is about 1.09 days, but the series reached 451.3 days on February 15, 2025. Such an extreme median requires a broad shift in the counted output population, rather than one unusually old output.
Consolidating many old outputs can lift MSOL without changing ownership. Output counts do not reveal how much BTC moved, and a median hides the tails of the age distribution. A low MSOL therefore does not rule out a large transfer of very old coins.
MSOL is the middle output age after sorting; ASOL averages all counted ages. A few extreme ages can pull ASOL sharply higher while leaving MSOL close to the typical output age.
Lifespan is elapsed time expressed in days, not rounded calendar days. A reading of 0.5 means about 12 hours between output creation and spending.
No. It only covers outputs spent during that day and weights outputs equally. Unspent holdings and the BTC size of each output do not determine this median.
