About this metric

What it measures

Spent Output Age Bands (SOAB) groups outputs spent each day by the elapsed time between their creation and spending. Each of the 13 bands, from <1h to >10y, shows its percentage of the day's spent output count, with each output counted equally regardless of BTC size.

How to read it

Growth in <1h or 1h–24h points to faster output turnover; a widening older band shows more aged outputs being consumed relative to the day's total. The 1y–2y band reached about 46.2% on February 1, 2025, far above its full-history median of about 0.7%.

A wallet can create or consume many small outputs, so a high count share need not move much BTC. Consolidations and transfers between a holder's own addresses also affect ages; percentages do not reveal total spending activity, and days without spent outputs can show zero across bands.

FAQ

How does SOAB differ from Spent Volume Age Bands?

SOAB weights every spent output equally. Spent Volume Age Bands weights by BTC amount, so a single large output matters much more in that chart.

Are spent output ages the age of the bitcoins since mining?

No. Age begins when the output was created and ends when it is spent. A transfer creates new outputs and restarts their age, even if ownership stays the same.

Why do the SOAB bands sometimes fail to add to 100%?

Rounding can cause small differences, and a day with no spending has no meaningful percentage denominator. Early zero-activity days should not be read as all age groups disappearing.
