Mitä se mittaa

Coin Years Destroyed is the rolling sum of daily Coin Days Destroyed over the previous 365 days. Despite the name, this series retains BTC-days as its unit: it sums a year of observations without dividing the result by 365 to convert days into years.

Näin luet sitä

A rising annual total means incoming age expenditure exceeds the older observations leaving the window; a falling total means the reverse. The record was about 6.73 billion BTC-days on February 22, 2018, while the 2024 range ran from about 2.66 billion to 5.60 billion, showing large changes even over a long window.

The curve responds slowly, and one exceptional transfer can affect it for a full year before rolling out. This version includes internal transfers and is not adjusted for supply growth; a high level reflects accumulated activity, not necessarily intense spending on the latest day.

Why are Coin Years Destroyed still measured in BTC-days?

The 365-day label describes the accumulation window. Adding daily BTC-days keeps the same unit; an actual conversion to BTC-years would require dividing the summed value by 365.

Why can the annual curve fall sharply after a quiet day?

A very large observation from 365 days earlier may have just left the window. The decline can therefore reflect an anniversary effect rather than an abrupt change in current holder behavior.

Does this track each calendar year separately?

No. The window moves forward every day and covers the latest 365 days. It does not reset on January 1.
