About this metric

What it measures

Inscription Transaction Fees sums the transaction fees paid each day by inscription-related Bitcoin transactions, in sats. Fees are split into Text, BRC-20, Image, Video, Audio and Other; these are daily totals, not average fees per transaction or fee rates.

How to read it

Higher totals can reflect more inscription transactions, larger transactions or higher fee bids. The BRC-20 category paid about 25,470 million sats on May 8, 2023, its recorded daily high, while Image's high of about 1,708 million sats came on December 19, 2023. Different categories can therefore contribute to fee demand at different times.

A category's fee total is not the price an individual user will pay. Costs denominated in sats also differ from dollar costs as BTC price changes, and one unusually expensive transaction can distort a day. Compare the total with transaction counts and network-wide fee share to separate activity growth from more expensive inclusion.

FAQ

Are inscription fees paid to miners or to the Ordinals protocol?

These are Bitcoin transaction fees paid to the miner who includes the transaction. They are separate from inscription asset prices or marketplace service charges.

How can I estimate the average fee for an inscription category?

Divide its daily fee total in sats by its daily transaction count, using matching dates and classifications. This gives a mean per transaction, not a typical fee quote or satoshis-per-vbyte rate.

Why can inscription fees fall in sats but rise in dollars?

A higher BTC price can outweigh a decline in the amount paid in sats. Dividing the day's fees in sats by 100,000,000 and multiplying by that day's BTC price gives their approximate dollar value.
