About this metric

What it measures

Change-Adjusted Median Transfer Volume ranks the measured BTC transfer amounts after identified change is excluded and takes the middle value. It is measured in BTC and describes the center of the amount distribution rather than the share of total value moved.

How to read it

A lower median indicates that the middle of the measured distribution has shifted toward smaller amounts; a higher median indicates larger amounts at the center. At the 2020 halving the reading was 0.03094 BTC, compared with 0.00000546 BTC at the 2024 halving, a substantial shift in the BTC-denominated midpoint.

The median does not capture the large transfers that can dominate aggregate volume. Change identification and output composition affect the sample, and some recent observations are recorded as zero. Such zeros should not be interpreted as an absence of transfers; read them alongside total volume and with attention to data precision.

FAQ

How does the median differ from the average transfer amount?

The median is the midpoint after ranking amounts, whereas the average divides their sum by the number of observations. A handful of very large movements can lift the average sharply without materially changing the median.

Why does the chart sometimes show a zero median?

Some daily observations are recorded as zero, including recent dates. This does not establish that no BTC moved; the underlying precision and treatment of very small or zero-valued observations need to be checked before interpreting those readings.

What is the 2024 halving reading in satoshis?

The recorded 0.00000546 BTC corresponds to 546 satoshis, using 100 million satoshis per BTC. Small BTC amounts are easier to compare in satoshis, though a zero recorded value cannot recover any missing precision.
