About this metric

What it measures

Realized Cap Share by Output Creation Year divides each year's realized cap by total realized cap and expresses the result as a percentage. Outputs are grouped by their creation year and valued at their creation-time USD price, so the year labels show the distribution of recorded capital rather than the distribution of BTC units.

How to read it

An expanding current-year share means newer outputs account for more of total recorded cost basis. Older groups can lose share as their outputs are spent or as other groups add dollar cost. The 2025 group represented about 72.73% on December 31, 2025 and 40.29% on October 17, 2026, illustrating the changing weight of one fixed vintage.

A share can fall without the same percentage of that vintage being spent because the denominator also changes. Transfers within one owner's wallets can create a newer, higher-cost vintage without fresh investment, and low-cost early outputs carry tiny capital shares. Read the USD version alongside this chart to distinguish absolute contraction from relative dilution.

FAQ

What is the denominator of each creation-year realized cap share?

It is total realized cap across all creation-year groups at that date. Each numerator is the USD cost basis of unspent outputs created in one year; the shares together are approximately 100%, allowing for rounding.

How does realized cap share differ from supply share by creation year?

Supply share weights every BTC equally. Realized cap share weights it by its last-move price, so a newer, higher-cost group can have a much larger capital share than coin share.

Can a year's share shrink even when its dollar cost basis is unchanged?

Yes. If total realized cap grows elsewhere, the same dollar amount becomes a smaller percentage of the total. Check Realized Cap by Output Creation Year before interpreting a share decline as spending from that vintage.
