About this metric

What it measures

Long/Short-Term Holder Profit/Loss Supply Share divides supply into LTH in profit, LTH in loss, STH in profit and STH in loss, using the roughly 155-day holding-age convention. Coins are in profit when their last-move price is below the current BTC price and in loss when it is above; each group is a percentage of total supply, not of its own holder cohort.

How to read it

Watch which loss group expands: STH in loss shows stress among more recent holdings, while LTH in loss extends that stress to older holdings. The latter reached about 32.30% of total supply on November 9, 2022, compared with a 2021 maximum of about 5.65%. Expanding profit groups show more coins above their recorded cost, not how large those gains are.

Price alone can shift coins between profit and loss without a transfer. Aging also moves supply between short- and long-term groups, while wallet operations can reset recorded cost and age. Compare all four groups together; the earliest zero values precede meaningful pricing and should not be treated as a balanced profitability snapshot.

FAQ

Does LTH in loss show the percentage of long-term holders losing money?

No. The denominator is total supply, and the numerator is BTC classified as long-term supply in unrealized loss. It counts coins rather than people and does not divide only by long-term supply.

How is this chart different from NUPL?

These four shares show where coins sit by age and whether their recorded cost is above or below price. NUPL measures the size of aggregate unrealized gains minus losses relative to market cap, so it captures loss or profit magnitude rather than supply composition.

Can LTH in loss rise even if older coins do not move?

Yes. A price decline can put unchanged holdings below cost, and higher-cost short-term coins can age into the long-term cohort. Neither mechanism requires long-term holders to transfer coins that day.
