About this metric

What it measures

Supply Last Active 5y+ is the BTC unmoved on-chain for at least five years divided by circulating supply, shown as a percentage. It includes the 5y–7y, 7y–10y and 10y+ age bands together.

How to read it

This share captures supply held still for longer than a typical four-year halving interval. It rose from 21.997% at the May 2020 halving to 31.173% at the April 2024 halving, reaching 33.633% on July 30, 2026. A higher share indicates a larger deeply dormant portion, not necessarily less willingness to trade among active holders.

Lost coins and durable custody holdings can make the ratio trend upward without fresh accumulation. It also reacts with at least a five-year maturation delay, and transfers by a few large old holders can interrupt the trend. Assess the active part of supply separately rather than treating all five-year-old coins as permanently unavailable.

FAQ

How is the 5y+ share related to the older BTC age bands?

Add the BTC balances in the 5y–7y, 7y–10y and 10y+ bands and divide by circulating supply to obtain the comparable percentage. Small differences can arise from rounding or cutoff conventions.

Does five years of dormancy mean the coins are lost?

No. Long-term holders and custodians can retain access for much longer. Dormancy is observable; whether a private key is lost generally is not.

Why can the 5y+ share rise without recent accumulation?

Coins crossing the threshold today last moved five years ago. Their continued inactivity increases the qualifying balance even when no new purchase takes place today.
