About this metric

What it measures

Illiquid Supply Net Change is the change in the modeled Illiquid Supply balance over 30 days, in BTC. Positive values mean the balance has grown over that window; negative values mean it has contracted.

How to read it

Persistent positive readings show expansion of the less mobile supply allocation; negative readings show a release from that allocation or a change in entity behavior. The series ranged from about -391,000 BTC in February 2024 to +146,000 BTC in December that year, illustrating that both directions can occur within the same calendar year.

This is a rolling change, so consecutive daily observations share most of the same window and should not be summed as independent flows. Reclassification, wallet operations and new issuance can affect the balance; a positive reading does not measure purchases, and a negative one does not confirm exchange selling.

FAQ

Is this a daily flow or a rolling change?

It is a 30-day balance change observed each day. A point compares the current illiquid balance with its level around a month earlier, rather than counting only that day’s transfers.

Does positive illiquid net change prove accumulation through buying?

No. It shows an increase in the modeled balance. Coins received earlier, newly issued coins and changes in entity classification can also affect it without an equivalent new purchase.

Can the line rise while illiquid supply is still shrinking?

Yes. A move from a large negative reading toward zero means the 30-day contraction has become smaller. The balance only shows net expansion over that window once the reading is positive.
