MVRV by Holding Period divides each coin-age band's current market value by its aggregate last-move cost basis, equivalent to BTC price divided by that band's average cost. The unitless ratios cover <24h through >10y; Overall is total market cap divided by total realized cap.
Above 1, an age band is in aggregate paper profit; below 1, it is in aggregate loss. On October 17, 2026, 6m–12m was about 0.936 and 1y–2y about 0.814, while Overall was 1.54. The comparison shows that some cohorts can remain underwater even when the full market is profitable on average.
A band changes membership as coins age or move, so its ratio can shift without price changing. Very low recorded costs give the oldest bands enormous multiples: >10y reached roughly 604,482 in February 2021. These are cost ratios, not leveraged returns, and the bands must not be summed or averaged equally.
Those coins last moved very recently, so their recorded costs are usually close to current price. Intraday price changes and measurement timing can still move the ratio away from 1.
Many early coins carry extremely low recorded costs, so current value divided by that small denominator creates a huge multiple. This does not establish a holder's verified purchase return, and early valuation assumptions matter.
It is the ratio of total market value to total cost basis. Mathematically it is a realized-cap-weighted average of valid band ratios, not a simple average and not their sum.
