About this metric

What it measures

Spent Volume by Wallet Size aggregates daily spent BTC into ten address-balance groups, from <0.001 BTC through >100K BTC, plus Total. It covers all qualifying spending regardless of profit or loss, measuring transferred BTC rather than transaction count or holdings.

How to read it

Compare the contribution of small and large balance bands to see whether turnover is broad or concentrated. On July 30, 2017, the 10K–100K BTC group reached roughly 6.42 million BTC while Total reached about 7.99 million BTC, so that historical peak was largely concentrated in one large-balance band.

A large address can represent a service holding coins for many clients, and one owner can control many small addresses. Repeated transfers and wallet consolidation may create outsized daily values without equivalent economic exchange; a higher reading does not identify whether coins moved to exchanges or changed owners.

FAQ

What does a large-wallet transfer-volume spike measure?

It measures BTC spent by the relevant balance cohort during that day. It does not show the number of wealthy investors, a net change in their holdings or the value of exchange sales.

How does spent volume by size differ from supply by size?

Spent volume is activity accumulated over a day and can count repeated movement. Supply by size is the BTC balance held in each group at a point in time.

Can a group have zero volume while still holding BTC?

Yes. Its holdings can remain positive while none of its coins contribute qualifying spending that day. Zero activity should not be interpreted as an empty balance group.
