About this metric

What it measures

Market Cap by Profit/Loss Status sorts coins by current price divided by last-move cost minus one, then values each group's BTC at current price. Return bands from <-78.6% to >300% are measured in USD, with Total representing their combined market cap.

How to read it

Wider negative-return bands show more current market value tied to underwater coins, while growth in positive bands shows a broader value base above cost. The >300% band reached about $1.01 trillion on August 13, 2025, versus about $65.97 billion of recorded cost for that band. The contrast shows how current-price weighting emphasizes deeply profitable supply.

Both price repricing and movement between return bands change dollar values; neither requires coins to be spent. The percentage labels describe returns, not market-cap shares, and a large profitable band is not profit realized. Lost early coins can remain in high-return groups, while pre-market USD history is not an observed market valuation.

FAQ

Does the >300% band show the dollar amount of profit?

No. It shows the current market value of coins whose unrealized return exceeds 300%. Their gain is current value minus recorded cost, not the full value of the band.

How do I find the share of market cap held at a loss?

Add the negative-return bands and divide by Total for the same date. Since all coins are valued at the same current price, that also gives their share of BTC supply under the same classification.

Can a coin change profit/loss band without moving?

Yes. Its cost stays fixed while BTC price changes, shifting its percentage return. Price alone can move coins between bands and revalue the market-cap amount within each one.
