About this metric

What it measures

Supply by Holding Period groups circulating BTC by the time since each coin last moved on-chain. The 12 age bands, from <24h to >10y, are balances in BTC; Total is the circulating supply represented by the series.

How to read it

Older bands grow when coins remain unmoved and age into them, while renewed movement resets age and adds to younger bands. The 1y–2y balance reached about 4.42 million BTC on May 18, 2019, and the 2y–3y band reached about 3.51 million BTC on November 2, 2023, illustrating how large amounts of supply can persist into older groups.

A band can fall simply because coins age into the next one, without any transfer. Lost coins remain in the older balances and custodial wallet moves reset age without a sale; use shares rather than raw BTC amounts when comparing eras with different total supply.

FAQ

How is this different from HODL Waves?

Both describe the age structure of held supply. This page shows the absolute BTC balance of each band, whereas HODL Waves show each band's share of the total.

Does a decline in the 1y–2y band mean those coins moved?

Not necessarily. Coins also leave that band by reaching two years and entering 2y–3y. Look at adjacent bands and spent volume to distinguish aging from renewed movement.

Are coins older than ten years necessarily lost?

No. Age only records how long coins have stayed unmoved, not whether their keys are accessible. Long-term savings and lost coins can both appear in >10y.
