About this metric

What it measures

Spent Volume by Profit/Loss Status sums daily spent BTC by the percentage price change since each output's previous on-chain move: (spending price / last-moved price − 1) × 100. Twelve bands range from <-78.6% to >300%; the band labels are returns, while their plotted amounts and Total are in BTC.

How to read it

A larger loss band means more coins are moving below their previous reference price; growth in high-gain bands points to spending of deeply profitable supply. The -78.6% to -61.8% band reached about 131,546 BTC on November 18, 2022, its historical maximum, documenting unusually heavy movement at substantial losses.

Amounts near breakeven often dominate gross turnover, and internal transfers can land in any band. The 0% to 20% bucket includes the breakeven boundary, so it need not match a strictly profitable-volume series; neither the band widths nor a single spike establish a future price turning point.

FAQ

Are the percentages on these bands shares of all transfers?

No. They describe each spent coin's gain or loss relative to its previous on-chain price. The chart measures how many BTC fell into each return band.

Why does a >300% gain band not mean the price rose 300% that day?

The comparison starts at each coin's last move, which may have been years earlier. It is a holding-period gain, not the daily market return.

How does this breakdown differ from SOPR?

SOPR aggregates spent value relative to acquisition value into one ratio. This chart keeps separate BTC volumes for different return bands, making the mix of modest and extreme gains or losses visible.
