Market Cap by Holding Period multiplies each coin-age group's BTC balance by the current BTC price. The 12 bands run from <24h to >10y and are shown in USD, with Total as their combined market value; age is time since the last on-chain move.
A larger band has more market value assigned to that age group. Its value can rise with BTC price even when its coin count does not change, so divide by Total to compare supply weights. The >10y band reached about $421.02 billion on October 6, 2025, illustrating the sizable current valuation of very old supply.
Coins migrate into older bands simply by waiting and return to the youngest band when spent. Self-transfers can therefore reshape the age structure without changing ownership. Lost coins remain included, and early USD values before a quoted market existed should not be treated as observed market capitalization.
Every age band's BTC balance is multiplied by the same price. Dividing each band's market value by Total therefore gives its BTC supply share, the basis of HODL Waves.
Yes. A higher BTC price lifts its dollar value even at an unchanged balance. Coins aging into the band can also add value without any new transaction.
This chart values them at current price. Realized Cap by Age leaves them at their last-move costs, which can be extremely low for early coins, giving them much less dollar weight.
