About this metric

What it measures

UTXOs Spent counts previously unspent outputs consumed as inputs by transactions confirmed each day, measured in outputs. Each consumed output counts once, regardless of its amount or age; one transaction can spend many outputs.

How to read it

High values indicate more input records being consumed, from active payments, wallet consolidation or repeated coin movement. The daily peak was about 1.75 million on October 15, 2023; the count was about 850,000 at the April 2024 halving, well below the roughly 1.91 million outputs created that day.

A high count alone does not mean many coins, old coins or sales. Small inputs can dominate, and the same coins can pass through newly created outputs more than once per day; compare creation and spending under the same counting rules, then use value and coin-age measures to identify what moved.

FAQ

How can UTXOs Spent exceed transaction count?

A transaction can combine many previous outputs as inputs. A wallet consolidating many small deposits may consume a large number of UTXOs in a single transaction.

Does spending a UTXO mean selling Bitcoin?

No. Spending means consuming an output under Bitcoin’s transaction rules. It can be a self-transfer, consolidation or payment, and need not involve an exchange or a sale.

Do more spent UTXOs always shrink the UTXO set?

No. The same transactions also create outputs, including change. Under consistent coverage, the set shrinks only when outputs removed exceed outputs added over the period.
