About this metric

What it measures

Mean UTXO Value Created divides the total BTC value of outputs created each day by their count, giving BTC per output. It describes the amount in a newly created output on average, not the average size of the entire existing UTXO set.

How to read it

A rising mean can indicate larger outputs or fewer small ones; a falling mean can reflect fragmentation even if aggregate value stays high. The mean was about 0.202 BTC at the April 2024 halving, while the median was 0.0001 BTC, illustrating how strongly large outputs can pull up the average.

Change outputs, internal transfers and repeated movement of the same coins are included. The measure is in BTC, so a lower BTC amount need not mean a lower dollar amount; early zero readings on days without output creation do not represent a meaningful average.

FAQ

How is average new UTXO value calculated?

Divide Total UTXO Value Created by UTXOs Created for the same day. Both the numerator and denominator must use the same output coverage.

Why is the mean new output value much higher than the median?

A few large outputs can account for much of the total BTC value. They lift the mean, while the median depends on the middle output by count and remains small when tiny outputs are numerous.

Does a larger mean output value prove whales are buying?

No. Large change outputs, exchange wallet movements or consolidations can raise the mean without a purchase. Ownership and trade intent cannot be inferred from output size alone.
