Cosa misura

Median Transfer Volume is the middle value of the on-chain BTC transfer amounts recorded each day, expressed in BTC per transfer. Sorting those amounts by size places half on either side of the median, so a few exceptionally large transfers have less influence than on the mean.

Come leggerlo

A higher median means the middle of the transfer-size distribution has shifted toward larger BTC amounts; a lower one means smaller amounts dominate that middle. The reading was about 0.05135 BTC at the May 2020 halving and 0.00655 BTC at the April 2024 halving, illustrating how much the typical BTC amount can change over time.

Transfer size is not transaction size in bytes or the fee paid. Small outputs, change and wallet practices can reshape the distribution, and a higher BTC price makes the same dollar payment smaller in BTC; the median alone cannot distinguish new economic demand from technical activity.

FAQ

How does median transfer volume differ from average transfer volume?

The median locates the middle transfer after sorting by BTC amount. The average divides total BTC volume by transfer count and can rise sharply because of a small number of very large transfers.

Does a lower median mean less value is moving on Bitcoin?

Not necessarily. Total volume can increase while most individual transfers get smaller, and a smaller BTC amount can represent more dollars at a higher BTC price.

Why is the early median transfer history so extreme?

The series reached 21,850 BTC on November 19, 2009, far above later typical readings. Early network activity was sparse, so its transfer-size distribution is a poor baseline for the modern network.
