Cosa misura

Change-Adjusted Average Transfer Volume takes the arithmetic mean of BTC transfer amounts after identified change outputs are excluded. The unit is BTC; removing change avoids treating the unspent remainder returned to a sender as an additional payment.

Come leggerlo

A rising mean indicates larger adjusted transfer amounts on average, while a falling mean can reflect smaller movements or more small-value activity. The daily high in 2021 was about 31.12 BTC, versus about 1.84 BTC in 2024, illustrating how the distribution of transfer amounts has changed.

Large movements can pull the mean far above the median. Change detection is an estimate, and removing change does not remove every transfer within one owner's wallets. Compare the median and adjusted total volume, and remember that a smaller BTC amount need not mean a smaller dollar value.

FAQ

Why exclude change from Bitcoin transfer volume?

Spending a Bitcoin output often sends part of its value to a recipient and returns the remainder to the sender. Counting that remainder as another payment would overstate the amount intended for transfer.

Why can the adjusted average be much higher than the median?

A small number of large transfers can dominate the total and lift the arithmetic mean. The median follows the middle observation and is less sensitive to those extremes.

Can I reproduce the mean using total volume divided by Transfer Count?

Only if both use the same sample and change filters as the average series. A general network transfer count need not be the denominator of the adjusted average, so unmatched series can give a different result.
