Mitä se mittaa

Short-Term Holder Profit/Loss Supply Ratio divides the BTC amount of short-term supply in profit by the BTC amount in loss, using the roughly 155-day cohort convention. It is a unitless ratio of coin quantities, not a ratio of dollar gains to dollar losses.

Näin luet sitä

Above 1, more recent BTC is in profit than in loss; below 1, underwater supply is larger. The series fell to roughly 0.00099 on June 12, 2022 and rose as high as 6,925.8 on December 15, 2024. These extremes show that recent supply can swing from almost entirely underwater to overwhelmingly profitable.

A nearly empty loss denominator can produce enormous ratios: the recorded high exceeds 26 million. An exactly zero denominator makes division undefined, so missing observations must not be read as zero profit. Coin aging, spending and cost resets also alter the cohort; the ratio says nothing about the depth of individual gains or losses.

Why can the STH Profit/Loss Supply Ratio be extremely large?

The denominator is BTC in loss. If almost no recent BTC is underwater, even an ordinary profitable balance divided by that tiny amount creates a huge reading; it is not a percentage.

What does a ratio of 1 mean?

Equal BTC quantities in the short-term cohort are in profit and in loss. That does not mean equal dollar gains and losses or that the cohort's average cost equals price.

Why does the valid ratio history begin in 2010?

The first finite observation supplied is July 19, 2010, although the dataset's overall date range starts in 2009. A ratio requires a usable loss denominator, so the page should not imply valid readings exist throughout the earlier range.
