About this metric

What it measures

Mempool Total Fees sums the fees offered by all unconfirmed transactions in the observed queue, in sats. A transaction’s fee is the difference between its input and output amounts; the total is pending fee value rather than fees already collected in blocks.

How to read it

A higher balance can reflect more waiting transactions, larger virtual sizes or more expensive bids. The series reached about 6,899 million sats on May 8, 2023, versus a full-history median around 16M sats, illustrating how sharply the pending fee pool can expand.

This is a stock observed through time, not a daily revenue flow: adding daily readings would repeatedly count fees that remain pending. Transactions may confirm, be replaced or disappear from the observer’s mempool. A recorded zero is not enough to establish that every node’s queue was empty.

FAQ

Can daily mempool fee totals be added to estimate miner revenue?

No. A transaction can remain in the mempool across several observations and be counted repeatedly. Miner fee revenue must be measured from transactions actually included in blocks.

Why can total pending fees rise while transaction count falls?

The remaining transactions may be larger or offer higher fee rates. Count measures how many are waiting, while the fee total measures the value in sats offered for their inclusion.

How are total pending fees different from the fee rate?

The total is an amount in sats. A fee rate is a price per virtual byte in sat/vB, so a high fee total alone cannot tell you what rate a new transaction needs.
