Om detta mått

Vad det mäter

Average Transaction Size divides the total byte size of the day's Bitcoin transactions by the number of transactions measured. The result is bytes per transaction, describing data size rather than the amount of BTC sent.

Så läser du det

Larger averages indicate a shift toward more data-heavy transactions, which can involve many inputs, many outputs or extra payloads. Smaller averages indicate a more compact transaction mix. The yearly high was about 1,554 bytes in 2023, while the reading at the April 2024 halving was about 299 bytes, showing substantial changes in composition.

A few very large transactions can move the mean, especially in the sparse early history. Bytes are not automatically virtual bytes or block weight, so this chart alone cannot determine fee rates, block utilization or the number of payments a block can fit.

Vanliga frågor

Does transaction size mean the BTC amount transferred?

No. A large BTC transfer can use a compact transaction, while a small-value transaction with many inputs or outputs can be much larger in bytes.

Is byte size the same as virtual size?

No. Virtual size accounts for Bitcoin's witness discount and is used with sat/vB fee rates. The series is labeled in bytes, so do not substitute it directly for virtual size.

Why is the early historical maximum so high?

The recorded daily average reached 19,569 bytes on December 1, 2009. Transaction activity was sparse in that era, making a daily mean much more sensitive to individual large transactions than in later years.
