About this metric

What it measures

Lightning Network Node Connectivity groups observed nodes by their advertised network access: Clearnet only, Clearnet + Tor and Tor only. Each series is a node count, describing access types rather than the number of payment channels attached to a node.

How to read it

Rising Clearnet only or Clearnet + Tor counts mean more observed nodes advertise public-internet access, while growth in Tor only points to more onion-only access. Tor only reached 11,380 nodes on June 12, 2022, compared with 5,148 on October 17, 2026, showing a substantial shift in the observed access mix.

A node can change category after updating its advertised addresses without closing channels. Announcements do not guarantee live reachability, and private or unobserved nodes are outside the view. These counts do not measure payment volume, routing success or how many peers each node has.

FAQ

Does node connectivity mean the number of channels per node?

Not on this chart. It counts nodes in three network-access categories: Clearnet only, Clearnet + Tor and Tor only. It does not measure graph degree or payment-channel connections.

What does Clearnet + Tor mean?

The node advertises access through both the public internet and Tor. It belongs to the combined category rather than being counted separately in both of the only categories.

Does a decline in Tor-only nodes mean Lightning usage fell?

Not by itself. Nodes may switch access categories, stop advertising addresses or leave the observed set. Payment activity is not revealed by the address type a node advertises.
