Informazioni sulla metrica

Cosa misura

Total Exchange Reserves is the combined BTC balance of on-chain addresses attributed to tracked centralized exchanges. Addresses are identified through clustering and labeling, so coverage reflects the exchanges being tracked.

Come leggerlo

A falling balance means more BTC is withdrawn from exchanges than deposited, as holders move coins to self-custody or long-term storage and the supply ready to be sold shrinks; this has often accompanied accumulation phases. A rising balance means more coins are arriving on exchanges, for sale or as collateral for derivatives, which adds potential sell-side supply.

The metric works best over weeks to months. Newly identified addresses and exchange cold-wallet migrations can create step changes, and coins moving from exchanges to institutional custodians or other non-exchange addresses also lower the balance without any buying taking place.

FAQ

What does a steady decline in exchange reserves mean?

More BTC is leaving exchanges than arriving, so the supply available for immediate sale is shrinking. The cause may be investors moving to self-custody or funds shifting to custodians, so read it alongside price and flows rather than as a trading signal on its own.

Why do exchange reserves sometimes jump in a single day?

The balance depends on identifying exchange addresses. When a new batch of addresses is attributed, or an exchange migrates or consolidates cold wallets, the tracked balance can change sharply and past values may be revised. Such moves reflect data or wallet changes, not trading.

How do exchange reserves relate to Exchange Net Flow?

Net flow is the daily difference between deposits and withdrawals, while reserves are the running balance those differences build up. Summing net flow over a period roughly equals the change in reserves over the same period.
