Cosa misura

Lightning Network Node Count counts distinct node identities visible in the public Lightning network graph, with each node counted once regardless of how many channels it has. The unit is nodes: these are participants in the payment-channel network, not Bitcoin addresses or a count of people using Lightning wallets.

Come leggerlo

A rising count means more node identities are visible in the public network; a falling count means fewer are observed. This series grew from 206 nodes on January 26, 2018 to a recorded high of 20,516 on March 19, 2022, and stood at 15,773 on October 17, 2026. The later reading shows that the visible node network was smaller than at its peak, without establishing how payment usage changed.

One operator can run several nodes, while a custodial service can serve many users through one node; nodes with only private channels may not appear in the public graph. Network discovery and the removal of stale announcements can also affect the count. Compare it with channel count and total capacity to assess network structure, rather than treating each node as an active user or assuming every visible node can currently route payments.

FAQ

Are Lightning nodes the same as Bitcoin full nodes?

They serve different roles. Bitcoin full nodes validate blockchain transactions and blocks; Lightning nodes manage payment channels and exchange off-chain payments. A Lightning node may use a Bitcoin full node as its blockchain backend, but the two network counts are not interchangeable.

Does the Lightning node count equal the number of Lightning users?

No. Many wallet users can share a service's node, and one person or organization can operate several nodes. Private-only nodes may also be absent, so the public count cannot be converted into a user total.

When did the Lightning Network node count reach its highest level?

The highest observation in this series was 20,516 nodes on March 19, 2022. The count was 15,773 on October 17, 2026, but this decline alone does not establish a fall in payment volume or in the number of wallet users.
