The 30-Day Address Holder Retention Breakdown counts addresses by holding status over a 30-day comparison window. New and Resurrected identify entrants that retain balances, New & churned and Resurrected & churned capture entrants that empty again, the three Retained groups distinguish rising, flat and falling balances, and Churned and Dead track exits and continued absence from holding.

Read New alongside New & churned to distinguish new funded addresses that keep BTC from short-lived balances. The same distinction applies to Resurrected and Resurrected & churned. Retained (balance flat) reached about 38.33 million on October 17, 2026, while New & churned reached its record of about 11.27 million on January 27, 2021; lasting balances and temporary address use describe different parts of the network.
Keeping a balance is different from transacting repeatedly: an untouched funded address can remain a holder. Counts do not measure how much BTC each group controls, and an emptied address may simply have moved funds to another address of the same owner. Dead is hidden by default and does not identify lost coins.

How does holder retention differ from activity retention?
Holder retention follows whether addresses continue to hold a balance; activity retention follows whether addresses keep participating in transactions. A funded address can retain its balance without being active in the current window.
What does New & churned mean?
These addresses first become holders during the window but empty their balances again before its end. They are separated from New so a burst of temporary addresses does not look like persistent growth in funded addresses.
Does Retained (balance down) mean an address exited?
No. Its balance declined but it remains in the retained holder group. An address that empties and leaves the holder population is represented by an exit category instead.
