Om denne måleverdien

Hva den måler

Lightning Network Capacity Gini Coefficient summarizes inequality in the observed public capacity distribution on a dimensionless 0–1 scale. It compares cumulative shares of capacity with equal allocation: 0 means equality and values approaching 1 indicate greater concentration.

Slik leser du den

A rising coefficient means the measured capacity allocation is becoming more unequal; a falling one means it is becoming more even. Recorded values range from about 0.94491 on April 26, 2022 to 0.97951 on December 28, 2025, so the observed distribution has remained far from equal throughout this history.

Gini describes the shape of a distribution, not its total size or who ultimately controls the funds. Results depend on the population being ranked and public-network coverage; private capacity is not visible. A high coefficient alone does not establish payment bottlenecks, ownership concentration or network failure.

FAQ

Does a Gini coefficient of 0.97 mean 97% of capacity belongs to one owner?

No. Gini is an inequality summary, not the share held by a single participant or a top group. Many different capacity distributions can produce a similar coefficient.

How is the capacity Gini calculated?

Rank the observations by capacity and compare cumulative capacity shares with the equal-allocation line. The normalized gap gives a coefficient between 0 and 1; the population and coverage used to build that distribution must remain consistent for comparisons.

Can capacity increase while the Gini coefficient also rises?

Yes. Total capacity can grow while the new funding is distributed unevenly, increasing concentration at the same time. Capacity totals measure scale, while Gini measures inequality.
