Om denne måling

Hvad den måler

Median Transaction Fee orders the fees of Bitcoin transactions confirmed during a day and takes the middle value, measured in sats per transaction. Unlike the mean, it is not pulled sharply higher by a small number of exceptionally expensive transactions.

Sådan læses den

A rising median means higher fees are affecting the middle of the transaction distribution, rather than just a few outliers. It reached 226K sats on December 22, 2017 and 144K sats on April 20, 2024; lower readings indicate smaller typical fees denominated in sats in the confirmed transaction set.

The median is per transaction, not per recipient or virtual byte, so batching and transaction size affect comparisons. It reflects transactions already confirmed, not a quote for the next block. Sparse early activity and changing BTC prices make direct cross-era comparisons of user costs unreliable.

FAQ

How does the median fee differ from the average fee?

The median is the middle of the transaction-fee distribution, while the average divides total fees by transaction count. A few very costly transactions can raise the average without materially changing the median.

Is the median transaction fee a sat/vB fee rate?

No. It is the total fee per transaction in sats. A sat/vB rate also requires the transaction’s virtual size, which this metric does not provide.

How should a median fee of 42 sats be read?

That is 42 satoshis per transaction (0.00000042 BTC), the recorded median on October 17, 2026. When expressed in BTC, this small amount can round to zero at limited display precision, so zero-looking BTC amounts need not mean the underlying value is zero.
